Please meet Grandpa *
Haychel, the wildest Riolu on deviantART! Also the Fan Artist of December 2012!
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself :3
I'm Haychel, a digital artist that has only been around for a year or so. I am originally from Hong Kong, but I now reside in Australia.
Oh really? How's the weather up there for you?
Ah it is crazy here, especially in Melbourne, where I'm at now. They usually say that we have four seasons in a day here haha... I guess that explains 6_9
2. Since you been here for a whole year, what is your biggest (and proudest) accomplishment so far? Like a time when you felt like you were right on top of the world
Haha I've never thought that I'm on top of the world. Whatever I do, there is always someone who can do it better than me, which is why I always strive to improve further!
Though, for my time here, I'd say that my biggest accomplishment would be having met a lot of cool folks from all around the world! Some became friends with me and we have fun sharing arts. It has been a real fun time!

3. What does "Art" mean to YOU?
I think that art is a really good medium to express myself. I can always tell stories with my drawings and share emotions from a character.
Of course, it is a very nice way to know more people as well! Without arts, I don't think I will ever meet all the cool people~
What does "Fan Art" mean to you?
I guess fan art is no different than normal arts. Ultimately, it is still arts unless you copy every single detail from official materials.
I would kinda think of it as a positive message that the fans love that certain cartoon or anime as well. If they don't like the products, then why would they draw fan arts out of them?
Also, it actually helps the society move somewhat, especially the Internet society, of course. It is like a mutual topic for groups of people~
4. As an artist, tell me one of the biggest challenges you had to face and how you dealt/faced with it.
One of the challenges that most artists would face would be to improve, in my opinion. It is not hard to draw anything you want and be with it. However, if you stay stagnant, you won't go anywhere. Thus, I always strive for improvement.
However, it is a really difficult task to go out of your comfort zone. It often takes a lot of time as well, which makes it a great challenge. For me, I deal with it by constantly testing myself with different subjects. For example, play with different color palettes or limit yourself to draw something within a given time. There are a lot of interesting exercise out there that would give you immense help on improving.
Of course, practice is a must! And I should say, a LOT of practices! XD Then again, money is another issue. For arts, you need to invest a lot of time, but if you don't strive for improvement, you will not find good earnings haha!
5. A popular question, what program(s) do you use and why?
I mainly use Paint Tool Sai and sometimes Photoshop. I use Paint Tool Sai mainly because it has helpful tools for artists that would making painting a lot more convenient. Whilst Photoshop might be able to deliver a similar job, Sai is more tailored for artists, especially for artists that paint.
As for Photoshop, I usually use it for the interesting textures or if I want a specific visual effect that Sai cannot deliver. Also, I work on animations with Photoshop, which is another task that I can't do with Sai.
Sai, if only Mac was compatible
Haha indeed, that's an issue :/
6. If you could give advice to a complete newbie artist or for those who are struggling, what would that be?
That depends on what that artist is striving for. I guess they should ask themselves a very important question first: Why do you do arts? It is of no use if you're merely doing arts because you want to be famous like that someone someone, or if you are just trying to look for more attention (I see this a lot actually). For me, at least, you must love art if you would like to go far with it. That actually applies to anything, really!
Anyway, If you are struggling, there are actually tons of tutorials on the Internet. Even on DeviantArt, there are more than plenty. Reading some of them always help. In fact, I acquired some skills from reading tutorials as well! Then again, remember to practice a whole bunch!
7. Do you have any upcoming projects planned? If you don't mind sharing it with us, consider it a PIMP spot here!
Uhm, I'm not quite sure yet, but I do have some projects that I would like to do, but time and money might be an issue. Anyway, I would love to make some huge and detailed Pokemon paintings, particularly with legendary Pokemon.
I would also love to explore some other fandoms as well. For example, Mario, Legend of Zelda, Full Metal Alchemist, Naruto and stuff like that.
I would probably do some commissions as well to make a living for my tuition fees here, just to help out my parents~
8. Random shoutbox! Say whatever you want here!
He said this: "Uh lol"
Changed my life
9. Click "Random Deviation" and tell me what you like about it!
A pretty interesting discovery~ I reckon that would be quite a cool palette as well! Might try that on some paintings.
And after all that...
"I'm sorry, but our princess is in another dungeon! You are being warped off now g'bye!"
Interesting interview indeed.
Also, PaintToolSAI4Mac exists. I don't remember where I downloaded it from but it runs really smooth for the most part, and I'm running OSX Mountain Lion.
